KANSAS CITY, Kansas (CMC) — Trinidad and Tobago played tough and frustrated the United States but suffered a narrow 1-0 loss in the 2014 CONCACAF Women’s Championship on Wednesday night.

The Soca Princesses forced the United States to labour by playing a tough defense and by keeping many players behind the ball.

Goalkeeper Kimika Forbes was outstanding in defeat, stopping mostly everything sent her way.

After enduring a frustrating first half of near misses, the US found their lone goal ten minutes into the second half from the boot of Abby Wambach.

A Carli Lloyd through ball found Alex Morgan bearing down on goal on the left side.

Morgan sent a cross to an open Wambach, who headed home her world-record 171st international goal in the 55th minute of play.

“Credit to them. They played a great game of soccer,” Wambach said.

“They stuck with their game plan. Their goalkeeper played a ridiculous game.”

Goalkeeper Hope Solo almost allowed T and T an equalizer when her goal kick was intercepted on the left side by Kennya Cordner who fired her shot over the crossbar.

Another Trinidad opportunity came in the 41st minute as Cordner took on defender Christie Rampone but was forced to shoot from a difficult angle.

The result left the Americans in a first-place tie with Haiti which defeated Guatemala one nil in the first game of the doubleheader at Sporting Park.

Lindsay Zullo scored the game’s only goal in the 69th minute, with the Haitians were reduced to 10 players.

Haiti goalkeeper Cynthia Chery was shown a straight red for grabbing Ana Lucia Martinez in the 17th minute, after mishandling a long pass played into the box by Marilyn Rivera.

Geralda Saintilus entered the match as a replacement as Haiti was also forced to remove Wisline Dolce from the field.

Marilyn Rivera took the penalty but Saintilus made a stunning save diving to her left.

Guatemala could have taken the lead in the second minute of first-half stoppage time.

However, Right-back Daniela Andrade sent a dangerous right-sided cross into the Haiti area that Yvrose Gervil inadvertently headed off her own crossbar.

Haiti return to action today against Trinidad & Tobago, while Guatemala will look to bounce back against the United States the same day.

Both matches will be played at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Illinois.
