SUNDAY’S National Drag Racing Circuit (NDRC) Drag Challenge number four at Vernamfield, Clarendon was brought to an abrupt end around 6:00 pm, leaving five races left to be run.

“The Jamaica Millennium Motoring Club (JMMC) stewards ordered the end of the race meet due to insufficient light,” Stephen Gunter, NDRC executive member, told Auto.

The event found itself running late into the evening as two on-track incidents robbed the meet of precious minutes as organisers rushed to beat the and fading light. Two racers suffered gearbox issues, both dumping oil in critical areas of the drag strip and one requiring a wrecker for removal. Given the speeds reached, maximum attention was turned to proper clean up.

“These two incidents happened back-to-back during the quarter finals and they resulted in a loss of approximately forty minutes,” Gunter explained.

Without the delays, the NDRC would have been able to conclude the meet with time to spare.

“Trophies will be awarded for the four classes that had completed their final race. All other awards will be as per NDRC policy, payout to the furthest round of competition,” Gunter said.

Irrespective of the delays, it had been another day of drag action that kept the crowd cheering. Notable performances included Michael Williams who broke both the four-cylinder and four-wheel drive quarter-mile records with a pass in 9.5-second range.
