Commissioner orders probe into killing of lock-up inmates
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Commissioner of Police Dr Carl Williams is this afternoon expressing regret at the deaths of two inmates and the injuring of a third, during an incident at the Savanna-la-Mar Police Lock-up in Westmoreland this morning.
“I am extremely concerned about the murder of any Jamaican, however the killing or injury of anyone in the custody of the Police is not taken lightly,” said Dr Williams.
According to the Williams, he has instructed the Inspectorate of Constabulary to carry out a thorough investigation into the circumstances of this morning’s deadly incident.
Savanna-la-Mar police confirmed the identities of the two inmates who were killed as 28-year-old Mosiah Morgan of Red Ground in Negril and 20-year-old Romario Reid of Hermitage in Bethel Town, both in the parish.
OBSERVER ONLINE was told that the deceased inmates and the injured man were all on murder charges. Reid and the injured man were remanded by the court for the charges, while Morgan was offered bail but could not take up the offer.
The two men who are accused of the attack, and who were both charged for separate shooting incidents, are being questioned by detectives from the Savanna-la-Mar police, with a view to laying charges.
Meanwhile the police said that on Saturday, November 29, as part of routine activities, a search of the cells was conducted and three knives and other contraband, including ganja, found.
