Badminton star Gareth Henry sets sights on Olympic goal
Gareth Henry, who dominated the recently-concluded All-Jamaica Seniors and Masters Badminton Championship, said he now has his sight on qualifying for the Olympic Games scheduled for Rio, Brazil in 2016.
“It has been a good 2014 season for me. On the international level I have moved from over 400 in ranking to 250 and so qualification for the Olympics is looking pretty good for me as that is my main focus right now,” Henry told the Jamaica Observer.
Henry knows very well that success will only come with hard work.
“I have been putting in some hard work lately as I am more committed to my goal. To be successful in what you do, you must work hard towards it and that is what I am planning on doing right now. Just training and more training for me,” he said.
Last week, Henry captured his third consecutive triple crown title by winning all three major titles — the Open Men’s Singles, the Open Men’s Doubles and the Open Mixed Doubles at the Constant Spring Golf Club Racquet Complex.
“I lost one tournament this year, but I came back and won the all important one and that is the All-Jamaica Seniors Badminton Championship; and what a way to do it by winning the triple crown. I am just so happy as it was my third consecutive triple crown at this championship and it is great accomplishment and it has now elevated my career in the sport,” the triple crown winner said.
The All Jamaica Senior Badminton Championship was Henry’s final local test before he leaves to participate in the Puerto Rico International, after which he will take part in a training camp in Indonesia before he begins a hectic schedule next year leading up to the Olympic qualification period.
