Man extradited to US on sex charges had pleaded guilty
NEW JERSEY, United States (AP) — A man who fled to Jamaica after pleading guilty to child sex assault charges seven years ago has been extradited back to New Jersey.Additional reporting by OBSERVER ONLINE
The Record reports that Homer Bishop is being held in the Bergen County jail without bail.
Authorities say the 41-year-old Bishop was living under an alias in Jamaica, but they were able to track him down after getting information from a tipster.
Bishop was accused of sexually assaulting a young female acquaintance for a year. The victim was 12 years old when the assaults began, and she told her mother of the abuse when she was 13.
Bishop pleaded guilty in August 2007 to aggravated sexual assault charge and remained free on bail. But he failed to appear for sentencing three months later.
OBSERVER ONLINE had reported Tuesday that Bishop – a Jamaican, according to a news release from the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s Corporate Communications Unit – was arrested on an extradition warrant on Tuesday, January 13, by detectives from the Counter Terrorism and Organized Crime Investigation Branch’s (C-TOC) Fugitive Apprehension Team.
The 41-year-old was reported to have been a technician of Margarete Villa Road, Kingston 10.
He appeared in the Half-Way-Tree Resident Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, January 15, where he was ordered extradited after waiving his right to an extradition hearing.
He left the island on Tuesday.
