Powell leads Jamaicans competing in Guadeloupe
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Former men’s 100m world record holder Asafa Powell will headline a number of Jamaicans who are down to compete at the 11th Meeting Region Guadeloupe, an IAAF Area Permit meet at Baie Mahault tomorrow.
Twelve Jamaicans, including long jumper Damar Forbes, will compete in the meeting.
Powell, who anchored a Jamaican team in the 4x100m relay at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia last weekend, has been quoted as saying he was targeting a “sub 10-second time” and will clash with the ageless wonder Kim Collins, who set several personal best times and world leading times in the 60m during the indoor season.
Winston Barnes is the other Jamaican in the race that will also see Americans Dentarius Locke and Sean McLean competing.
Four Jamaicans, including two former national champions — Dane Hyatt and Oral Thompson — will contest the 400m, along with Chumaine Fitten and Riker Hylton.
Americans Calvin Smith and James Harris are expected to challenge the Jamaicans.
Rushell Clayton, who won the college women’s 400m hurdles at the Penn Relays will be joined by Nikita Tracey and Ristananna Tracey in the event that will see Americans Tiffany Williams and Cassandra Tate taking part.
In the men’s 400m hurdles Leford Green will fly the Jamaican flag along with Andre Clarke, while Forbes will be the only Jamaican in the long jump.
