A living legend of screen and song, Jimmy Cliff took on a familiar role — as the star attraction — for a fund-raising dinner and silent auction hosted by the Scotia Foundation and his own eponymous foundation inside the Grand Jamaica Suite at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel on Monday evening.

Cliff, who would later hold the audience in rapt attention with his transportive and impressive catalogue of hits, said he was encouraged to establish a foundation not only at the urging of his wife Lativa, but also as he saw children and the elderly “as the two areas of humanity in our civilisation that we tend to overlook”.

The music superstar revealed that children’s sports, education and autism initiatives were beneficiaries of his foundation. Meanwhile, Joylene Griffiths-Irving, executive director of the Scotia Foundation, informed that the Scotia Foundation, which was founded in 1997, will split the targeted $2.2 million in proceeds raised from Monday’s fund-raiser to assist the Child Development Agency’s Therapeutic Centre, the National Child Month Committee and Cliff’s Foundation.
