Adam Stewart’s recent award as Hotelier of the Year by the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA) is most deserving, and I think I speak on behalf of all Jamaicans who have been impacted by Sandals or another Stewart-owned company when I say congratulations, well deserved.

At age 34, not many wealthy children would become burdened with their parent’s hectic business. Instead, they would lead a life of fun; simply indulging in their father’s riches. Adam Stewart, however, became CEO for the Caribbean’s largest private employer at age 25 and set out on a mission to not just increase his family’s wealth but to bring about change in the Caribbean in several aspects, with his Sandals Foundation becoming a name synonymous with giving back in the areas of education, health care, disaster relief, and the environment. Not many foundations have such a broad reach and tremendous impact on several islands simultaneously.

The passion with which Stewart speaks at official functions about Jamaica, the Caribbean, and his company, I wish our elected officials would have such conviction, as he always leaves the audience hopeful that everything is possible and tomorrow will be better than today. In Adam Stewart I am hopeful that Jamaica’s private sector will continue to solidify itself as the true driving force behind the economy, as he is not afraid to put his money where his mouth is and invest where he sees potential both in people and product.

Gordon ‘Butch’ Stewart has elevated himself beyond the pinnacle of business in the Caribbean, and his legacy will surely live on through the drive, vision and commitment of his son. He, too, will create a new legacy that will grow this truly Jamaican brand to new heights. Once again, congratulations to the Sandals Group for another award, and congratulations to Adam Stewart, Hotelier of the Year, and newly nominated man of the year by me and many other Jamaicans who believe in Jamaica.
