St Kitts concede late to share points with El Salavador
MIAMI, United States (CMC) — St Kitts and Nevis conceded late to settle for a share of the points against El Salvador, while Dominica and the Dominican Republic both suffered home defeats in the opening leg of their second-round contests in the CONCACAF 2018 World Cup qualifiers on Thursday night.
Playing in Basseterre, the home side came from a goal down to lead 2-1 with four minutes left before El Salvador scored, as the game ended 2-2 at Warner Park.
At Windsor Park in Roseau, Dominica let in a goal in either half to go down 2-0 to Canada, while in Santo Domingo, Belize grabbed a goal two minutes from full time to beat the Dominican Republic 2-1.
The drama played out at Warner Park, however, when the hosts fell behind four minutes before the break through a Irving Herrera strike.
Orlando Mitchum equalised in the 68th minute, however, and when Romaine Sawyers struck three minutes later, the hosts were on top.
The lead held until the 86th minute when second-half substitute Nelson Bonilla struck to dash St Kitts’ hopes.
Dominica, meanwhile, were shut out of their contest early, when Cyle Larin netted in the fifth minute.
The points were sealed in the 63rd minute when Russell Teibert converted from the spot.
