The 4-1-1 on video interviews
Dear Career Advisor:
I have a video interview scheduled for next week but I’m a little anxious about it. How does a video interview really work? Will I be at a disadvantage using this method? Do you have any suggestions as to what I need to do in preparation?
Sincerely,
Andrew C.
Dear Andrew:
The use of video technology as a platform for interviews is growing in popularity among employers and recruiters. Video interviews are as effective and, in some instances, of greater value to both the employer and the applicant. They can either be conducted live or pre-recorded. You need to be aware of which of the two modalities will be used.
In the live format, the interviewing panel meets in a location and you interface with them via a video screen. You are usually able to see the members of the panel, and they you.
The pre-recorded modality is gaining popularity as a preferred method for competency-based interviews. The interviewers, who might be in different locations, are able to review your pre-recorded responses and make comparisons with the responses of other candidates. You are usually given 10-15 questions, and you are expected to use no more than two minutes to provide a response to each. Some platforms allow you the option of re-recording until you are satisfied with your response before you submit.
In preparation for your video interview here are a few things to consider:
i. BEFORE the interview, carefully review the instructions you have been given. If you are uncertain about any aspect, be sure to contact the company by telephone or e-mail before the interview date.
ii. Check that your webcam, microphone and other equipment are working properly.
iii. Ensure that your background is presentable, free of distractions, and has adequate lighting.
iv. Use your webcam to do test recordings of yourself speaking. Determine if you are satisfied with how you appear on screen and with the intonation of your voice.
v. ON THE DAY of the interview, dress professionally and be on time.
vi. Follow the directions given.
vii. DURING the interview look at the camera, not on the keyboard, and do not allow your eyes to wander around the room.
All the best,
