JSE rates Sagicor in number one spot among brokers for 2015
THE Jamaica Stock Exchange (JSE) indicated on Monday that the brokerage firms which made top rankings for trading on the Exchange in the Jamaican dollar market in 2015 were Sagicor Investments Limited at number one, NCB Capital Markets (NCBCM) Limited at number two, and in third place Mayberry Investments Limited.
The ranking refers to the total value of regular trades and does not include block transactions.
The Jamaican-dollar market saw 5.4 billion units being traded with total value of $72.07 billion.
There are around 40 security dealers registered locally. Among the top ten for 2015 was first-placed Sagicor which was responsible for 43 per cent of the value of transactions. Next was NCBCM with 16.59 per cent of value traded. Mayberry accounted for 14.49 per cent of value traded.
Comparatively, on the US dollar market the number of units traded was 24,602,573 with a value of US$5,035,436. Top broker on this market was Proven Investments Limited with 48.7 per cent of value, followed by Mayberry Investments with 13.07 per cent of value traded.
In third place was Scotia Jamaica Investments Limited with 12.66 per cent of value.
There are only two companies currently listed on the US-dollar market — Margaritaville (Turks) Ltd and Proven Investments Ltd, while there are nearly 60 on the Jamaican-dollar market.
Marlene Street-Forrest said Monday that based on the JSE criteria for a broker to be considered as number one, Sagicor Investments placed first in 2015.
The general manager noted that “value and volume arising from block transactions are not included in our computation nor our index”.
There were 10 block transactions during the year with a total value of $44.2 billion and involving 2.34 million units by volume.
Included was a large block trade made in March 2015 when the Bank of Nova Scotia transferred all of its 71.78 per cent shareholding in Scotia Group Jamaica Limited to Scotiabank Caribbean Holdings Ltd, a 100 per cent-owned regional financing and holding subsidiary in Barbados.
