It is truly a sad day for Blues fans who were greeted with the news today that their talismanic captain John Terry will be leaving the club at the end of the season.

The news was confirmed when Terry told reporters after Chelsea’s 5-1 victory away to Milton Keynes Dons earlier today that his 18 year association with the club will come to an end this summer.

What comes as an even bigger surprise is that it was the club’s decision not to renew the centre back’s contract.  Terry however seemed to have taken the club’s choice on the chin, insisting that he was made aware of the decision before the Arsenal match and that he has mentally accepted it.

“The club will move on.” Terry stated “No player is ever bigger than the club. Ideally I would have loved to stay but the club is moving in a different direction. No doubt they’ll sign one or two great centre backs.”

The 35 year old did say that even though he is disappointed that he will not be able to retire at Chelsea, he will do so elsewhere at another club that is not in the premier league.

He became captain in 2004 and has since led the club to four Premier League titles, three league cups, four FA Cups and one Champions League. He is undisputedly Chelsea’s greatest ever captain, a legend that will surely be missed by the players, staff and everyone else associated with the club.
