Boys’ and Girls’ Champs 2016: Excelsior’s Love wins discus event with record throw
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Shanice Love of Excelsior High launched a personal best 52.73m to win the girls’ class one discus throw and achieve the second record of the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships now under way at the National Stadium in Kingston.
Love, who had two previous foul throws, maintained her balance and composure to erase the previous mark of 51.16m set in 2013 by Tara-Sue Barnett of Edwin Allen.
Devia Brown (42.76m) of Hydel High was second with Tracey-Ann Simms (41.52m) of St Jago taking the bronze medal.
Aiko Jones of Wolmer’s Girls won the class two shot-put final with a heave of 15.13m, getting the better of pre-season favourite Avery Pryce (13.76m) of Vere Technical and Ashtina Dobson (13.39m) of Buff Bay High.
Excelsior have assumed the early lead with 15 points ahead of Hydel on 14 points and St Jago with 10 points.
Wolmer’s (nine), Holmwood Technical (seven) and Vere Technical (seven) round off the top five.
