Andree Powell became the second of three females from the batch of 17 apprentices who began their career on September 26 of last year to ride a winner when she steered Samora to a massive upset victory at Caymanas Park on Wednesday.

Samora won at odds of 173-1, winning by a comfortable five lengths overSir Leyland Hall (Ryan Nelson) andFire Alarm (Robert Halledeen) in a Restricted Allowance event over 1,000 metres. The winning time was 0:58:2 seconds.

“It is a very blessed and wonderful feeling to win my first race. I have been waiting on this day for seven months and I am happy that all my hard work and dedication really paid off today (Wednesday),” the 25-year-old Powell said with obvious joy in her eyes.

Powell, who was her batch’s valedictorian, added: “Thanks to my trainer Donovan Plummer for the ride. I have ridden a couple of horses for him and I just never gave up, always giving my best, and I am just happy that I could deliver the goods for him.

“The instruction was to get a good break, don’t do anything, and ride him for the last two and a half furlongs. That is just what I did,” ended the graduate of Clarendon College.
