Poor air quality forces shutdown of transport ministry
THE Ministry of Transport and Mining on Maxfield Avenue in Kingston was yesterday forced to shut down its operations shortly after 9:00 yesterday morning because of the poor quality of the indoor air.
Members of staff were immediately evacuated from the building and the Fire Brigade and health departments called in to investigate, the ministry said in a press release.
Staff were sent home at 11:00 am and placed on standby to resume work at mid-day today, once the public health department says its safe for them to occupy the building, said the release.
“Preliminary findings suggest that the poor air quality could be associated with fumes from a standby generator. The generator was activated last (Sunday) night in the wake of the power outage that rocked the Jamaica Public Service Company,” said the release.
