Most Jamaican track and field fans, even the diehards, might be forgiven if they can’t identify Remona Burchell in a line-up of female sprinters despite her holding one of the best records at the NCAA by any Jamaican female sprinter of recent vintage.

In her two years at the University of Alabama she won three NCAA titles, two Indoors 60m and the 100m in 2014 and second in 2015 while chalking up an impressive list of accolades.

The 24-year-old Burchell last competed in Jamaica at the ISSA Girls’ Championships five years ago in 2011 when she took a pair of silver medals in the Class One 100m and 200m.

It was her second and final season competing for Herbert Morrison Technical after transferring from Cambridge High and she ran 11.73 (-1.0m/s) in the 100m to finish behind Vere Technical’s Deandra Whitehorne, and was also second in the 200m to Yanique Ellington of Holmwood Technical in 24.18 seconds (-0.5m/s).

Two Saturdays ago she was fifth in the 100m at the JN Racers Grand Prix in a season’s best 11.24 seconds (0.6m/s) and said, “It feels great to be back.”

She could have meant both back home or back on the track after battling injuries last year and earlier this season.

“I wanted to compete at (the JAAA) Trials last year but had a hamstring injury,” she reported but said, despite another setback this year, she was making progress. “I am getting better each race, I was out of practice and just getting back.”

Burchell, who is based in Austin, Texas, and is under the guidance of coach Matt Payne, has a personal best 11.03 seconds done in 2014, her first season at Alabama after leaving Butler County Community College in Kansas.

She just missed improving her personal best a year later in a truncated season, but is hoping to pick up where she left off earlier last year and says the JAAA Olympic Trials could be the meet she needs to get back on track.
