KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) has confirmed that 32 Jamaicans were deported on this morning’s charter flight from the United Kingdom, a lesser number than the authorities expected.

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Devon Watkis , a short while ago disclosed at a briefing that only six women were a part of the group.

Sophia, the mother of a sick British boy who was expected to be sent back to Jamaica today — as reported by The Independent newspaper and carried by the Jamaica Observer — was not among the number.

She was held back due to litigation issues, Watkis said.

He added that some of Jamaicans were sent back due to drug-related offences while others were in breach of immigration laws.

In addition to the JCF, agencies involved in the process now being undertaken at the Mobile Reserve headquarters are: the Passport, Immigration & Citizenship Agency (PICA) and non-governmental organisations, which will see to the welfare issues of deportees with no family here.

The national security and foreign ministries said in a news release yesterday that since September 2016, a total of 152 people were deported to Jamaica from the UK.
