Adams, Sharpe dominate Everyone’s a Winner

Lenford Adams and Llori Sharpe dominated the field to take the male and female 5K titles respectively in the second event of the two-part Everyone’s a Winner The Best Dressed Chicken Road Race Series on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 18 at the Hope Botanical Gardens. Adams posted a winning time of 16:19 minutes ahead of perennial road race challenger Shawn Pitter (16:51 minutes) and Kajay Walker (17:21 minutes) in third. On the female side, 16-year-old Sharpe crossed the line in 21:57 minutes, way ahead of Sherona Stewart (23:11 minutes) and veteran 42-year-old, Victoria Nelson (23:43 minutes).

Adams was claiming his second victory in the 5K event to complete a series sweep, following his triumph at the first event in the Everyone’s A Winner The Best Dressed Chicken Road Race Series back in April.

In other events on the day, Oshane Archibald won the Men’s 10K race in a time of 33:43 minutes, with Garfield Gordon taking second place with 34:43 minutes. Ryon Chambers posted 35:57 minutes for third place. In the female equivalent, Melinda Renuart took top honours with a time of 41:28 minutes ahead of Tricia McCatty (45:50) and Ophia Simmonds in third, with a time of (46:09 minutes).

In the 5K walk events, Natasha McKenzie captured the female crown, crossing the line in 31:34 minutes, ahead of Paula Sinclair in 33:01 minutes, and Catherine Stewart in 34:34 minutes further back. Duwell Allen reigned supreme in the Male 5K walk, posting 26:38 minutes to win. Jon Saleen Oliphant was second in 28:45 minutes, while Gladstone Johnson stopped the clock at 30:56 minutes for third.

The annual road race series culminated on Father’s Day and, despite the rains and flash flood warnings issued across Jamaica, Alfred Francis, race director at Running Events Jamaica, organisers of the event, was pleased with the turnout on the day.

“This is a unique event on the race calendar, not only because of the location and vibe, but also the sense of achievement that comes with completing both events in the series challenge. Boosted by the fact that it is a family oriented event, with lots to engage in afterwards — from entertainment to the post-race massages and food, plus the fact that it is Father’s Day — just adds another special element.

“I am pleased with today as the rains threatened the proceedings, but we stuck it out and the patrons came out in their numbers to be part of it yet again,” said Francis.
