Champions Cornwall College tackle Morant Bay in second-round start

MONTEGO BAY, St James — Seven former champions, led by current holders Cornwall College, will start their hunt for places in the quarter-finals of the ISSA/FLOW daCosta Cup football competition today when first-leg games of the second round get under way.

Clarendon College and reigning champions Cornwall, who ended with 19 ranking points, will be away to Green Island High and Morant Bay High, respectively. Green Island and Morant Bay are the two best third-placed teams and ranked 32nd and 31st, respectively.

St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS), last year’s beaten finalists and the number three ranked team, will face Cedric Titus High; while Manchester High, the fourth-ranked school, face Ewarton High.

For the first time, the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) will play the second round in a home-and-away play-off that will see 16 ties. The winners on aggregate will advance to the quarter-finals.

The top two teams from the 15 zones, plus the two best third-placed teams, have been awarded bonus ranking points and the format will see the top team facing the 32nd-ranked team, number two against 31st, and so on.

Only 10 of the 16 games will be played today, however, as the game between Central High and Garvey Maceo to decide the winners and runners-up in Zone N will be played today. The result will help to determine the complete final ranking.

Yesterday Bellefield High came from behind to beat Porus High 2-1, scoring twice in the final 19 minutes to take second place in Zone M and qualify for the second round on goal difference over Denbigh High. Both ended on 13 points.

Bellefield High trailed 0-1 on Saturday when the game was called off, but managed to score twice yesterday when the game resumed

For their efforts, Bellefield get to play Dinthill Technical, who won all 10 games in Zone K, at Manchester High today.

Clarendon College, who just missed out on three titles, making it to the semi-finals of the daCosta Cup, Ben Francis KO and the FLOW Super Cup, will continue their quest to atone for last year and will take on Green Island, who placed third in Zone B behind Rusea’s High and Frome Technical.
