Take over wage negotiations, Holness
Dear Editor,
I am really disappointed in the way the negotiations regarding the pay increases for government workers are being handled. It is taking too long and unpleasant things can happen in such a situation.
I don’t know who is advising the prime minister or Ministry of Finance and the Public Service, but that adviser is not doing a good job.
These are government workers, they are Jamaicans, they are not adversaries of the Government, nor is the government an adversary of the workers.
The prime minister needs to act now; take over this matter, meet with the police, teachers, nurses, all the groups, and explain to them the tough situation that now exists regarding certain International Monetary Fund conditionalities that have to be met by the country. He should then request that the workers accept seven per cent over two years and promise a better offer when things get better in the very near future.
These workers are reasonable Jamaicans who love their country and would like things to return to normality as soon as possible.
Over to you, Prime Minister Holness. You need to act now!
