Claiming apprentice Oneil Scott won the native-bred three-year-old maiden condition race on Saturday aboard the 7-1 betting option Wilson, trained by Richard Azan, after losing by a nose in a stirring stretch battle with Yaya’s Dream (Omar Walker).

After the horse went by the winning post there was an immediate inquiry followed by an objection from Scott.

Then the announcement came that 1-9 favourite Yaya’s Dream had been disqualified and placed behind Wilson.

Scott came into the race with the notion that he could win, and realising that he had a fairly useful three-year-old bay gelding under him, began his challenge for parity leaving the half-mile to be in contention after setting down for the final 200-metre drive.

An incident might have developed after straightening for the drive, but Scott said that his intention was focused on getting his mount to the finishing line as Wilson was travelling well.

“I pointed at one stage of the race but I was later pegged back to lose by a narrow margin,” Scott said. That gives you three wins for the season. How does that make you feel?

“You mean, that I won two and got one in the Stewards’ Room? Yes. A win [is a win]nonetheless. I feel good in myself, but I still have a far way to go and a lot more things to learn,” said Scott, who rode 18 winners last season.

Wilson, a bay gelding by Storm Craft out of the War Marshall mare March Pen owned by NYA, rewarded his backers with handsome dividends of $419 to win by $94 to place, and completed 1,200 metres in a time of 1:13.4.
