How to get rid of cellulite
A common myth about cellulite is that it only affects those that are overweight.
Cellulite is not only associated with those who are overweight but is a major concern for a majority of females and some males of all ages, sizes and race.
What is cellulite?
Cellulite is the dimpled appearance of the skin that some male and female have on their hips, thighs and buttocks. It is more common in females due to the different distributions of fat, muscle and connective tissue.
Types of cellulite
Cellulite can range from mild to moderate or severe. The characteristics of a mild case of cellulite would be an “orange-peel” appearance, with superficial depressions and a slightly draped or sagging appearance to the skin.
Moderate cases of cellulite would have a “cottage cheese” appearance and the skin appears moderately draped.
Severe cases of cellulite would have a “porous” appearance with numerous deep depressions, and the skin severely draped.
Causes
The exact cause of cellulite is unknown. Studies have shown that heredity, skin thickness, gender, age, and the amount of body fat can all influence the extent to which cellulite is present or visible.
Cellulite can occur because of all these factors but, scientifically, it appears to result from an interaction between the connective tissue in the dermatological layer that lies below the surface of the skin and the layer of fat that is just below it.
Treatment
Several therapies and techniques have been suggested for removing cellulite. Some of them are:
Ultrasound cavitation
This uses a hand-held device to transmit sound waves. It may work, but it can take several sessions.
Laser treatment
This can thicken the skin by increasing collagen production. The thickened skin may reduce the appearance of the cellulite below.
Endermologie
This involves a deep massage with a vacuum-like device that lifts the skin. The United States Food and Drug Administration has approved it as safe.
Infrared sauna
This involves covering the affected area with a special wrap, then entering the sauna for a 30-minute session.
Radio frequency
This aims to reduce cellulite by heating it, but any results are short term.
Liposuction
This removes small amounts of fat, but this may make dimpling worse.
