Firefighters douse canefield fire
THE cause of a fire that gutted a section of the canefield along Mandela Highway in St Catherine has not yet been determined.
The Jamaica Observer was told yesterday that six firefighters from the Portmore Fire Station responded to a call at 3:37 pm that the canefield was ablaze.
District Officer Yunita Welsh told the Observer that when the firefighters arrived on the scene, smoke from the fire blanketed the highway.
Welsh, while noting that only one unit containing 450 gallons of water was used to put out the blaze, said her colleagues’ only concern was preventing the fire from spreading.
She said her team accomplished its objective.
“Commendation to the team,” said Welsh, who was the only female firefighter on the scene.
