RACE-car driver Fraser McConnell continued his run of success in the Americas Rallycross (ARX) ARX2 Championship by winning the seventh round of the series at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in Austin, Texas, last Saturday.

“It’s a really great feeling to extend my championship lead and make my country proud,” McConnell, 20, told the Jamaica Observer ‘s weekly Auto magazine.

This is his third-straight victory and his fourth overall for the year, having won round two in mid-Ohio, then hitting a three-peat starting with rounds 5 and 6 at the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres in Canada, and last weekend’s win. With 170 points, McConnell is now 33 points ahead of his nearest rival American Cole Keatts. 2018 champion Conner Martel sits 53 points behind.

“I like to think that I am in a good place for the championship. However, I like to take it race by race and not dwell on the championship too much,” he said.

While McConnell isn’t focused on the championship title, not yet anyway, he is happy that he will be able to complete the season, having secured sponsorship from Jamaican award-winning, all-inclusive hotel chain Sandals Resorts International.

“I am more than honoured to be representing Sandals, as they are the number one all-inclusive luxury resort, and to be supported by the best is great motivation to keep giving it my best,” he said.

ARX heads back to Mid-Ohio on October 5 for its last two rounds.

“Right now, I just want to finish the year as strong as I can.”

After a very successful local career in circuit racing and Rallysport, he dipped his foot in Rallycross waters last year, joining the ARX2 division of the ARX series competing for DirtFish Motorsports. ARX2 is the support series for ARX, featuring a one-make championship formula that puts each driver in a Ford-based, four-wheel drive naturally-aspirated race car rated at 310bhp. It takes place alongside the regular ARX rounds, serving the secondary function as a driver feeder series for the main ARX championship.

“Going into a doubleheader at mid-Ohio, we have a great chance of winning the ARX2 championship for the second year in a row, and I am very excited to make that a reality,” Justin Simpson, CEO, DirtFish, said in a press release.

In 2018, he finished fourth in the series and for 2019 he currently races not only in ARX, but the World Rallycross (WRX) Championship.
