St Lucia to roll out digital vaccine passport
Prime Minister of
St Lucia, Allen Chastanet, says the country will implement a digital vaccine
passport to keep a record of citizens who have been vaccinated against COVID-19.
Chastanet made
the announcement while speaking at a press conference on Wednesday (March 17).
According to
Chastanet, while a paper record is currently available, the country is moving
towards a digital application that can be presented upon request.
“The Government
Modernisation Unit has already been working with the Ministry of Health for the
last three weeks on creating an electronic version so we started off with as
you know, a manual implementation of the rollout of the vaccination programme,”
he said said.
“I’m hoping that
by next week, the electronic version will be done so we will manually update
the database, and it will create an electronic file for you that you’ll access
online but certainly you can also put it into your iPhone or when you’re
travelling that will give you an electronic record of your vaccination,”
Chastanet added.
The United
States, Canada and Denmark are already exploring the possibility of introducing
vaccine passports, with several airline companies touting the passports as
a way to revive the industry that is among one of the hardest hit by the
pandemic.
