Wounded Chelsea face Fulham in London Derby

The first major sacking of the new Premier League season took place on Tuesday (September 6, 2022) when Chelsea fired Thomas Tuchel after the Blues were beaten by Dinamo Zagreb in Champions League action. Chelsea will now aim to rebound from that loss when they clash with Fulham in a feisty London derby tomorrow, Saturday, September 10. Chelsea are expected to announce Graham Potter as their new manager.

Then later Saturday defending champions Manchester City and title hopefuls Tottenham will collide in a mega showdown at the Etihad Stadium in a must-see clash.

Event # 1 – EPL, Fulham vs Chelsea – 6:30 am

New Chelsea owner Todd Boehly must have been very furious, having spent over £255 million this summer on new players, only to watch Chelsea lose their first Champions League match of the season to Dinamo Zagreb, a Croatian team whose biggest transfer this summer cost a meagre £4 million. Boehly sat next to UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin, and his expensively assembled side embarrassed him. Boehly’s actions were swift and decisive, he fired Thomas Tuchel immediately after the completion of the match.

With that said, The Blues, Chelsea, will be aiming to bounce back from their midweek loss when they travel to Fulham for their London derby. Having beaten West Ham 2-1 last Saturday, Chelsea currently sit sixth in the table and will be hoping for a win to climb up the table. They should arrive at Fulham confident of securing a win as they have gone unbeaten against Fulham in their last 10 away matches in all competitions. However, Chelsea are without a win away from home in their last two league games.

Fulham have not been in the best of form at home recently, winning just two of their previous 15 Premier League matches, and they have managed just one win against Chelsea in their last 33 head-to-head meetings. Fulham will be smelling blood ahead facing a wounded Chelsea side that will arrive at Craven Cottage with heads down and the stage could be set for a major west London derby upset. Following their opening day 2-2 draw with Liverpool at home, there have been wins over in-form teams Brentford and Brighton, and despite being beaten 2-1 away at Tottenham last weekend, they will still be fired up for this clash.

KEY STATS

• Fulham – have won just one of their last 27 Premier League London derbies (D5 L21), beating Brentford 3-2 at Craven Cottage last month. They last won consecutive top-flight home derby matches in April 2013.

• Chelsea – have won eight of their last nine away Premier League London derbies, with the exception being a 3-2 loss at West Ham last season. The Blues have kept seven clean sheets in this run, conceding four goals.

• Both sides – Chelsea have lost just one of their 30 Premier League games against Fulham (W19 D10) and are unbeaten in their last 20 against them since a 1-0 loss in March 2006.

The betting tip. A Chelsea win or draw.

Event # 2 EPL – Manchester City vs Tottenham – 11:30 am

The last two unbeaten teams in the English Premier League will go head-to-head tomorrow, Saturday, September 10 when defending champions Manchester City host Tottenham, with both sides hoping to maintain their unbeaten status in the league.

Manchester City are the most impressive side in world football currently, they are undefeated in the new campaign, not just in the Premier League but in the UEFA Champions League as well — the Blues played their first Champions League match on Tuesday, hammering Spanish side Sevilla 4-0 in Spain. But they did slip up in the League last weekend, playing to a 1-1 draw with Aston Villa. City will see that draw as a minor setback in their quest to retain their title, having plundered 20 goals in their opening six matches with the recently acquired star Erlin Haaland scoring 10 goals from six matches so far.

Although Tottenham have not been as dominant as Man City, they are sitting third in the league table on 14 points just behind City. Indeed, Tottenham will travel to the Etihad hoping to continue their recent good form against Manchester City, having done the double over them last season winning 1-0 at home on the opening day, before claiming a memorable 3-2 win at the Etihad. Tottenham were the only side in the top three to record a win last week and will aim to maintain their early season momentum and prove that they are genuine title contenders.

KEY STATS

• Manchester City – have won their last seven Premier League home games, scoring at least three goals each time. The last team to win eight straight top-flight home games while scoring 3+ goals were Tottenham between March and September 1965.

• Tottenham – won home and away against Manchester City in the Premier League last season, accounting for 67 per cent of the Citizens’ total league defeats. They could become the first-ever team to win three consecutive league games against a side managed by Pep Guardiola.

• Both sides – Manchester City have lost four of their last five Premier League games against Tottenham (W1), as many as they had in their previous 19 against them (W12 D3).

The betting tip. Draw – both sides to score.
