Cop kills alleged gunman in attempted hold up
ST CATHERINE, Jamaica — One of two gunmen who reportedly attempted to hold up a policeman in Greater Portmore, St Catherine last night, was shot and later died in hospital.
Shavon Smith, 27, a carpenter from Seaview Gardens, Kingston 11, was pronounced dead shortly after he was dropped off at the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) by unknown individuals, believed to be his cronies.
It was reported that about 10:00 pm, the policeman was standing along the roadway in Gore Tuca, waiting for a friend, when Smith and another man walked up, brandished guns and ordered him not to move.
The policeman pulled his licensed firearm and discharged six rounds at both men, who ran to a white Toyota Probox motor car that was waiting nearby.
Smith was transported to the KPH later in the night in a white Toyota Probox, suffering from gunshot wounds. He was admitted but succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.
This morning, Wednesday, November 2, the policeman identified Smith as one of the two men who accosted him last night.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) is probing the incident.
