Jamaica’s talismanic striker Khadija “Bunny” Shaw is confident she will extend the rich vein of form which saw her being named the Barclays Women’s Super League Player of the Month for October.

The senior Reggae Girlz captain, who has had a bright start to the new campaign, ensured it was a largely successful month for Manchester City, as she was instrumental in the club’s three victories in October over Leicester City, Tottenham and Liverpool.

In those three encounters, the Gareth Taylor-coached side was on target nine times, while conceding once.

Shaw, 25, contributed five goals and one assist, and continues to ride high at the leading scorers chart in this season’s Women’s Super League.

The Spanish Town native fended off the challenge of Manchester United duo Mary Earps and Leah Galton, West Ham’s Dagny Brynjarsdottir, Chelsea’s Lauren James and Arsenal’s Frida Maanum to claim the Player of the Month award.

With Manchester City seeing several high-profile departures this season, this opened more opportunities for Shaw to shine and it comes as no surprise that the classy player has obliged in impressive fashion.

“I am delighted to win this award for the first time. It has been a very successful month for us as a team and I am grateful to everyone who voted for me in a very talented shortlist of players,” Shaw said.

She has already picked up where she left off in October, as she again found the net in City’s 3-0 win over Reading at the top of this month.

“We are feeling so confident after these recent wins and I am really enjoying my football right now, personally, but the most important thing is results and helping the team to have as much success as possible,” Shaw noted.

“I will keep working hard to continue my goalscoring form, to help carry on our great form of late and to keep the smiles on our fans’ faces,” she added.

Reggae Girlz Assistant Coach Xavier Gilbert believes the award is testament to Shaw’s quality and determination to succeed.

“It’s a tremendous achievement on her part and we are extremely happy for her,” Gilbert told the Jamaica Observer.

“I think she truly deserves it because she has been working hard from the start of the season and has been capitalising on the fact that she is now getting more minutes.

“So this is just her reaping the rewards and her club has benefited from her services and we are proud to have a Jamaican, moreso our captain, winning such an award in one of the top leagues in the world,” he added.

And as the Reggae Girlz were scheduled to face Paraguay in the first of their two friendly internationals at the Montego Bay Sports Complex in Catherine Hall on Thursday, Gilbert was quietly confident that Shaw would bring that fine form to the fore.

“We want to hit the ground running as we intensify preparations for the World Cup, so it is great that she came in with such a form and we have no doubt that she will be instrumental in leading us from the front as always,” Gilbert reasoned.

“So we are elated and excited for her and her achievement and hopefully she can continue along this path for the remainder of the season and continue to fly the Jamaican flag high,” he said.
