KINGSTON, Jamaica –A Jamaican-born US Navy sailor has been bestowed the honour of being the flag bearer at Super Bowl LVII on Sunday.
Petty Officer in the 3rd Class, Shyeed Crooks’ name was randomly picked out of a hat.
Crooks, 30, will be the sailor carrying the Navy flag with the colour guard at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona ahead of the Philadelphia Eagles facing off against the Kansas City Chiefs for American football supremacy.
The Jamaica College old boy and Clarendon native, who joined the Navy Ceremonial Guard in 2021, will be making his TV debut as a part of the Joint Armed Services Colour Guard.
“I feel a little bit of weight on my shoulders knowing that I’m representing my colleagues, the Navy and my family,” said Crooks, a resident of St Lucie County, Florida.
“This is a job that really the one per cent get to do, and I do not take that for granted at all,” he told St Lucie County media house TC Palm.
“Obviously with that responsibility, you’re going to be a little bit nervous, but I’m also trying to enjoy the moment too and have fun,” he added.
