The Meteorological Service of Jamaica says a trough across the western Caribbean is expected to maintain unstable weather conditions during the weekend.

According to the met office, a cold front which has been producing cloudiness and showers is expected to move across Jamaica on Thursday before stalling and lingering south of the island through to Friday.

Afterwards, the trough is expected to be the dominant feature.

“Expect cloudy conditions with periods of showers and thunderstorms to continue through to Sunday as a result,” the met office said.

The Met Service forecast predicts that there will be scattered afternoon showers across most parishes and thunderstorms mainly across southern parishes on Thursday afternoon.

On Friday, it predicts isolated morning showers across eastern parishes, and scattered afternoon and evening showers across most parishes, with thunderstorms mainly across western parishes.

On Saturday and Sunday, the forecast is for morning showers across eastern and south-central parishes. Scattered afternoon and evening showers are anticipated across most parishes, with thunderstorms mainly across northern parishes.

The development is welcomed by most Jamaicans, especially in the Kingston and St Andrew areas where drought conditions have forced the National Water Commission (NWC) to implement supply restrictions since February in order to slow the fall in water levels at the two main catchment facilities.

While water levels had not hit a critical stage, an adjustment had been necessary to ensure supply over the next few months, the authorities had said.
