#Champs2023: KC’s Phillips wins second Champs gold
Kingston, Jamaica – Kingston College’s Amani Phillips won his second gold medal at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ National Athletics Championships after he won the Class 3 boys’ long jump on Friday’s penultimate day, a day after he won the high jump.
Phillips won the long jump with a wind-aided jump of 6.53m (2.7m/s), 20 centimetres better than Excelsior High’s Michael Graham who also had a wind-aided mark 6.33m (4.1m/s) with Calabar High’s Richard Green taking the bronze medal with 6.25m (2.4m/s).
Phillips led from the first round where he jumped 6.36m (3.1m/s) and never looked back as Graham also made his mark in the first round with 6.26m (2.1m/s).
Green, who would have been seventh after the first round, got his best mark in the second round and fouled the last three efforts in the final.
A day earlier, Phillips cleared 1.81m to win the high jump, beating Munro College’s Selethel Josephs who also had the same height.
Calabar High’s Green won the bronze with 1.75m, same as Cornwall College’s Carlyle Tingling who was given fourth place.
