Mt Alvernia, Irwin register wins in schoolgirl basketball
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Mt Alvernia High and Irwin High scored wins over Holland High and William Knibb Memorial, respectively, on Friday as the regular season of the ISSA Western Conference Girls Open basketball ended.
Mt Alvernia High avenged their loss to Holland High in the first round with a come-from-behind three point (25-22) victory, while Irwin were 20-15 victors as both winners shored up their semi-final standings.
Herbert Morrison lead the standings with 20 points after winning all 10 games, Holland High finished second with 17 points, one more than Mt Alvernia High (16 points) and Irwin High, in their first season, held onto the final semi-final spot with 14 points.
William Knibb were fifth on 12 points and Muschett High sixth with 10 points.
The semis and finals will be played after the Easter holiday break, the organisers told the Jamaica Observer.
Mt Alvernia High, who were beaten 41-18 in the first round, trailed Holland High 12-15 going into the fourth quarter, but rallied with a 13-7 fourth quarter with Moya Ricketts scoring 10 points, while Tiana Spence and Caustina Holness both scoring six points each.
Jemelia Hines scored 16 points for Holland High as Tessanne Nesbeth scored six points.
Irwin High also trailed after the first quarter 3-7, but came back in the second quarter to lead 12-7 at half-time and were up 16-10 going into the fourth round.
Samara Poyser scored seven points for Irwin while Breana Hawthorne scored six points and had nine rebounds and five steals.
Allain Walters led William Knibb with eight points.
