#CariftaGames2023: Clarke retains Boys’ Under -20 400m hurdles title
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Roshawn Clarke defended his Boys’ Under- 20 title and Jody-Ann Daley improved on her Under -17 silver medal from last year as Jamaicans won two of the four gold medals in the 400m hurdles on Sunday’s second day of the 50th CARIFTA Games that is being held at the Thomas Robinson Stadium in Nassau, Bahamas.
Clarke, who won a bronze medal at last year’s World Under- 20 Championships, dominated his final and despite hitting the 10th hurdle and stumbling, ran an impressive 49.92 seconds.
It was gold and silver for Jamaica with Antonio Forbes taking second place with 51.72 seconds and Shimar Bain of the Bahamas third with 52.48 seconds.
Daley improved on her 2022 performance when she won the gold in the Under- 17 final in 1:01.05 seconds, her second medal of the championships after she won the silver in the 400m on Saturday.
Darvinique Dean of the Bahamas won the silver with 1:02.50 seconds while Jamaica’s Rhianna Lewis took the bronze with 1:02.61 seconds.
The impressive Michelle Smith of the US Virgin Islands who won the Under -17 gold medal in Jamaica last year, won the Under- 20 gold on Sunday with 57.69 seconds to beat two Jamaicans- Tonyan Beckford who was second with 58.94 seconds and Alliah Baker third with 59.55 seconds.
Akanya Samuel-Francis of St Kitts/Nevis won the Under- 17 boys’ 400m hurdles with 54.14 seconds, to beat Deandre Gayle of Jamaica- 55.10 seconds and Demarco Bennett also of Jamaica- 55.27 seconds.
