It’s official! Global soca sensation Machel Montano was never “too young to soca”. On Thursday, April 18, 2023, the Bob Marley Museum, under the patronage of sponsors WiPay, and CariMed Group Ltd welcomed the celebrated king of soca along with his mother and former manager “Lady” Elizabeth Montano, for the launch of his book King of Soca.

The evening’s event, hosted by corporate communications powerhouse Lisa Ghany, entrepreneur Hypa Hoppy and New York-based journalist Patricia Meschino, kicked off with a cocktail hour and saw support from Deryck Lance Murray, high commissioner for the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago to Jamaica; musicians such as the King of the Dancehall Beenie Man and Protoje; and politicos, including member of parliament for Saint Andrew East Central Dr Peter Phillips, state minister in the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport Alando Terrelonge, and St Catherine North Western Member of Parliament Hugh Graham.

Attendees were treated to a display of archives in the museum that chronicled Montano’s 40-year career, plus, a performance by the Soca King himself. The highlight of the evening was when guests had the opportunity to have their copies of the book personally signed.
