I’m Fred, Mahogany clash in Eros Trophy
THE Eros Trophy, a Grade Stakes/Open Allowance event for three-year-olds and upwards, is the feature race on tomorrow’s (Saturday, July 29, 2023) 10-race programme. Only five of the top horses in training are entered for the seven-furlong (1,400m) contest.
The analysis of runners is published below.
1. RUNAWAY ALGO (USA): (4 ch c by Algorithms – Misunify) – Was an easy 12 ½-length winner of the Thunderbird Trophy over seven furlongs on June 17. Runaway Algo loves to race on the front end, and once he gets a comfortable lead early on in the race he’s going to be difficult to catch. However, with the presence of I Am Fred and Mahogany in the line-up Runaway Algo will have to be at his very best if he is to get by any of the top two.
2. KING ARTHUR: (6 b g by Natural Selection – Geisha’s Art) – Continues to be competitive in his races. King Arthur enters this trophy event with two consecutive second-place finishes and is expected to deliver another good effort.
3. I AM FRED (USA): (5 b g by Golden Lad – Happy Hailey) – Comes into this race seeking his fifth-consecutive victory from as many starts in 2023. I Am Fred defeated stablemate King Arthur by ¾ length in the Distinctly Irish Trophy over nine furlongs and 25 yards (1,820m) on June 3. I Am Fred is a versatile campaigner who can lead, stay with the pace, or come from behind runners, making him hard to beat.
4. MAHOGANY: (6 ch g by Sensational Slam – Mete-Orite) – Well-decorated runner who only has two runs so far this season. Mahogany raced on February 4 and easily won the 6½-furlong Eileen Cliggott Trophy in 1:19.2 before placing third behind I Am Fred and Calculus in The Viceroy Trophy over one mile on April 22. There is no doubt that Mahogany has speed but he also has the ability to come from behind runners and a lot is going to depend on what Mahogany does here. If Mahogany presses on the headlines he might fall prey to I Am Fred, and if he decides to come off the pace he might fall short of catching Runaway Algo.
5. Eagle One (USA): (6 b g by Astrology – Frisky Cheerleader) – Only in the race to make up numbers.
