Diotima’s NINE-NIGHT

SO2 (Part 1)

Let’s Talk New York Fashion Week (NYFW)…

Known as one of the big four — along with London, Paris and Milan — NYFW ranks high amongst the most prestigious events on the fashion calendar.

Naturally, the presence of several Rock stunners added oomph to the week-long affair that started on Friday, September 7 and ended on Wednesday, September 13.

First And Foremost…

Monday, September 11, marked Diotima’s New York Fashion Week debut. The label’s Spring 2024 collection, which was unveiled at a gallery space in West Chelsea, saw its Jamaican-born creative director and founder Rachel Scott interrogating the impact of slavery in the Caribbean with ‘Nine-Night’, a collection of crochet and tailored pieces.

For Spring 2024, Scott collaborated with noted Jamaican contemporary artist Laura Facey to stage Nine-Night. The two met over DMs, though Scott was long familiar with Facey’s work. Scott’s pieces are styled with Facey’s miniature carved wooden hearts, worn by models as necklaces, belts, and earrings.

Next…

A mere few weeks ago, Jamaican designer Edvin Thompson was introduced as one of two designers tapped by fashion icon Naomi Campbell to collaborate with her on her maiden PrettyLittleThing collection; the spotlight remains on him with acknowledgements from Vogue Runway and Essence for his own Spring 2024 collection ‘Out Of Many, One People’.

The collection — an ode to where he has been, where he is going and how he sees the future and surrounding world — although not part of the NYFW schedule, still managed to catch the attention of discerning industry insiders through the visuals of his lookbook.

Paying homage to his Jamaican heritage, dancehall remains a major source of inspiration.
