JAMAICA’S outstanding engineers were applauded for excellence in their craft at the annual awards dinner and gala at Jamaica Pegasus Hotel on November 18. The event also saw the passing of the baton from Immediate Past President Godfrey Boyd to President Oneil Josephs, and a guest address by Audrey Tugwell Henry, president & CEO, Scotia Group Jamaica.

Topping the list of awardees was National Works Agency (NWA) CEO Everton Hunter who was celebrated for over 40 years of service to various Jamaican bodies, including the NWA, National Water Commission, Ministry of Health, and Carib Engineering Company Limited.

The coveted Engineering Project of the Year Award was presented to Airports Authority of Jamaica/MBJ Airport Limited for the Sangster International Airport runway extension & associated works project.

The Ministry of Health and southern, northern, western, south east regional health authorities were specially recognised for their management of communicable diseases, while Jamalco received a special award for “expeditious restoration of the refinery operations which supports the nation’s continued economic performance”, following a fire last year.

As is their tradition, the JIE applauded “the most outstanding Jamaican engineering students” and presented awards, in association with title sponsor Suncoast Beach Club, to graduate students Kyle Smith, The University of the West Indies; Shemone Wright, University of Technology, Jamaica; and Seandre Wallace, Caribbean Maritime University. The immediate past president’s picks for his 2022-2023 Council Awards were Michael James, Outstanding Graduate Member; the Engineers’ Week Committee for the Best Committee Award; and engineer Melissa Townsend who secured The President’s Cup.

Special president’s awards were also presented to engineer Gary Walters; JIE business administrator Karla Brackett; and Public Relations Consultant Marcia Erskine for dedicated service to the institution.
