PARIS, France, (AFP) — The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) on Tuesday said it had filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in the case of Norah Jeruto, the former steeplechase world champion who last month was cleared of doping.

Jeruto — gold medallist for Kazakhstan in the 3000m steeplechase at the 2022 world championships — had been provisionally suspended by the AIU in April “for the use of a prohibited product or method” after anomalies were identified in her biological passport.

A disciplinary tribual lifted her suspension in early November after it ruled that the anomalies detected, which suggested blood sampling, were not sufficient to conclude that blood doping had occurred.

The AIU indicated on X, formerly Twitter, that it had filed an appeal with CAS to challenge the decision that the 28-year-old Jeruto did not commit an anti-doping violation.

Kenya-born Jeruto has represented Kazakhstan in competition since January 2022.

Kenya has seen a surge in doping cases, with nearly 70 athletes -– mainly long-distance runners -– being banned over the past five years.

In September, the AIU appealed to CAS against a decision to clear Nigeria’s 100m hurdles world record holder Tobi Amusan of whereabouts failures.
