PARIS, France — Quarter-miler Junelle Bromfield says she is not perturbed by the recent backlash she faced over comments made by her boyfriend, reigning world sprint double champion Noah Lyles of the USA, about the insights that he has received from her about the country’s track and field affairs.

In a recent interview, Lyles spoke about his relationship with Bromfield and mentioned that he learned about Jamaican camps over the past five years.

“Junelle being Jamaican and having trained in MVP, I have been getting a lot of drama from the Jamaica camp for at least five years now,” he said. “There are a lot of times I make references about Jamaicans, but I am not trying to go back and forth, like I know information that other people don’t.”

After Lyles’ comments, fans on social media accused Bromfield of secretly giving inside information to her boyfriend.

However, Bromfield, who will be contesting the 400m event, told the Jamaica Observer that she is not focusing on any negativity at the moment and is instead aiming to do her best for the country in Paris.

“It hasn’t affected me at all because I believe that I have gone through so much in my life with my family and everything, so the opinions of strangers have no impact on me,” she said, adding that she has not been following the comments people are making about her on social media. “Honestly, I haven’t seen half of them [comments], so no.”

Bromfield, who will be attending the Olympic Games for the second time in her career, will be competing in an individual event for the first time as she is down to contest the women’s 400m. Bromfield finished third at the National Championships last month, where she ran a personal best time of 50.74 seconds in the final.

She says she has done hard work in her preparations for the Games and is aiming to produce her best efforts on the day.

“I am feeling good and I am excited for running to start because I just want to get it out of the way,” she said. “My preparations have been going well because I am just taking it one step at a time and seeing what I can really do.

“I have never ran in an individual event at a major championship like this, so I am just excited to see what I have in store.”

Bromfield was a member of Jamaica’s 4x400m relay team that won the silver medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021. She says that being at the Olympics is a big accomplishment for her and plans to make the most of the opportunity.

“This means a lot because I am now a two-time Olympian,” she said. “In 2021, I was here just for relays, so now I have an individual spot on the team in the 400m. My goal is to just run my race and see what I have to give.

“I went into Trials, and nobody expected me to come out of the first round, and I have an individual spot here. That just goes to show that nothing is written in stone, and when you show up at a championships, you just have to go in your lane, focus on yourself, and just run.”
