Mahogany dominates Open Allowance
IT was a one-horse show as the heavily favoured Mahogany toyed with the competition before pulling away to a resounding five-and-half length victory in the Open Allowance contest.
With the expertise of 2024 Jamaica Derby-winning jockey Shane Ellis in the saddle
Mahogany showcased his superiority, clocking an impressive 1:26.2 minutes (24.1 x 48.0 x 1:12.4) for seven furlongs (1,400m) and beating Easy As ABC and Thalita who trailed in second and third, respectively.
Trainer Ian Parsard’s star pupil proved unbeatable, cementing his status as one of the top horses in training at present as Mahogany’s dominant performance left no doubt about his class and talent.
Mahogany burst out of the gates, quickly finding his rhythm and settling into second position behind Yellowstone (Oshane Nugent), with Madelyn’s Sunshine (Shavon Townsend) and Easy As ABC (Raddesh Roman) running in third and fourth places, respectively. As the field hurtled down the backstretch Mahogany maintained his effortless stride, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.
Approaching the half-mile marker, jockey Ellis gave
Mahogany the green light and the talented gelding surged to the front, taking command of the race. From there it was effectively over as a contest as
Mahogany effortlessly opened up a gap on the field, his lead growing with every stride.
Turning for home, and with no challengers in sight, Mahogany unleashed his full fury, accelerating away from the pack with a devastating turn of foot. Crossing the wire with ease, Mahogany recorded a resounding victory, leaving the competition in his wake.
Mahogany is a seven-year-old chestnut gelding bred by Sensational Slam out of the Traditional mare Mete-Orite.
Jockeys Tevin Foster and Shane Richardson shared the top honours, each securing a double on the nine-race card.
Foster’s victories came aboard Storm Valley in the opening event for trainer Andre Adams, and Midnight Flight in the fourth race for trainer Byron Davis.
Richardson triumphed with Crimson in the second race for trainer Carlton Cunningham, and Sheboom in the sixth race for trainer Alroy Watson.
On a day of evenly distributed success no trainer managed to snag more than one win.
Racing continues on Saturday.
