Mexico sues Google over ‘Gulf of America’ change
Mexico is suing tech giant Google for ignoring their repeated requests not to call the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America” on Google Maps for US users, according to a report from the BBC.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum did not say where the lawsuit had been filed and the report indicated Google did not respond to the BBC’s request for comment.
The lawsuit comes amid a Thursday vote in the Republican-led House of Representatives to officially rename the Gulf for federal agencies.
The report says Sheinbaum’s government is arguing that the name change only applies to the US portion of the continental shelf, not the entire Gulf.
The lawsuit also follows threats of legal action when a letter from the Mexican president to Google asking the firm to reconsider was not complied with.
Google defended its decision and said it had always updated place names when they are updated by official government sources.
The tech company went on to indicate that the name would not be changed for people using the app in Mexico, and users elsewhere in the world will see the label: “Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)”.
The report indicated that Trump hinted Wednesday that he may recommend changing the way the US refers to another body of water, referring to the Persian Gulf as the Arabian Gulf or the Gulf of Arabia, AP reported.
US President Donald Trump is expected to make the announcement in an upcoming visit to Saudi Arabia. It has already received backlash from Iran.
