Ralford Mullings breaks 33-year-old NCAA discus throw record
KINGSTON, Jamaica—Olympian Ralford Mullings of the University of Oklahoma threw a meet record 69.31m to win the men’s discus throw at the NCAA Division 1 outdoor track and field championships on Friday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, upsetting world record holder Mykolas Alekna of the University of California in the process.
In a dominant display, Mullings took over the lead in the third round when he threw 67.70m, breaking the 33-year-old meet record of 67.06m set by Kamy Keshmiri of the University of Nevada in 1992.
Mullings also threw 67.48m in the fifth round before ending the competition with 69.31m.
Alekna, who threw 75.56m to set both the collegiate and world records in April this year was second with 66.77m, another Jamaican, Racquil Brodrick of the University of Southern California, who was second last year, finished in fourth place with a personal best 63.31m, I beating his previous best of 63.09m set earlier this year.
Trevor Gunzell of the University of Alabama, the third-ranked thrower in the field and his teammate Christopher Young finished 14th and 15th, respectively.
