Jamaican jockeys shine at Century Mile
…Dane Nelson secures feature win; Tevin Foster earns three victories
DANE “Warrior Chief” Nelson, a renowned Jamaican champion jockey, has once again demonstrated his exceptional skills by securing a feature win at Century Mile in Canada. On Friday, June 27, 2025, Nelson rode Itsallgoodman, trained by Gonzalo Anderson, to victory in the CAN$50,000 Spangled Jimmy, a prestigious Black Type Handicap Stakes race for three-year-olds and upward over sevn furlongs on the dirt.
Nelson’s win was a testament to his expertise and strategic riding. He expertly guided Itsallgoodman (Speightster – Geisha Peebles), allowing the horse to settle early and sit in striking range from a rail position. As the race progressed, Nelson urged his mount to overtake horses and surged to the lead at the quarter pole.
Despite being under pressure through the stretch Itsallgoodman held strong under Nelson’s skilled hands, crossing the finishing line first by a length and a quarter. Ticket to the Top, ridden by N’Rico Prescod, finished second, while Drinking Again, piloted by Scott Williams, came home in third place. The winning time for the race was 1:22.0.
“The ride on Itsallgoodman was great and I am thrilled to have come out on top. The horse was feeling good, and I am grateful to trainer Gonzalo Anderson for giving me the opportunity to ride this talented horse,” Nelson told the Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide.
With this impressive victory Nelson now has 16 winners, tying him with Rasheed Hughes for the top spot in the standings. This achievement is a notable milestone for Nelson who has established himself as one of the top jockeys in the competition.
Meanwhile, Jamaican Tevin Foster earned three wins over two days. His first winner on Friday was Jodeys Lil Pain in the sixth race of 11. Foster’s second success on Friday was achieved in race nine on Bakfire Baby for trainer Jason Coney.
Foster followed up on the Saturday card (June 28) with victory atop the Seymour Biggs-conditioned Ameer in the sixth event.
Foster’s wins bring his total to four, placing him 10th in the standings. Linton Steadman, who has two wins so far, ranked 14th, while Ruja Lahoe, Samantha Fletcher, and Richard Lunan are yet to get off the mark.
