Who are you? What do you want to be?
THE question of identity is most important, and primary in the life of the young man and the young woman. All young people are driven to be most handsome or beautiful. Everyone feels that it is a compliment that other young men or young women lust after them. That is the purpose of make-up in our times.
Lipsticks are red, pink, or even white to make a woman’s lips look delicious. The eyebrows are plucked, shaped and pencilled in order to give beauty and definition to the eyes. Nostrils are pierced and nose ring inserted to accent that the person is a millennial. Of course, men wear earrings in order to emphasise that they are vogue or modern, and can go whichever way sexually.
Hairstyles are multiple, with endless variety and colours which might change every day, according to the look the young or old person wishes to project for a particular occasion or day.
Their make-up ends up being a disguise rather than enhancement.
It is ugly rather than beautiful. It is darkness rather than light. It is sadness rather than joy. It does not tell who you are and what you want to be. As 1st Peter 3:3-4 says, “Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewellery or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.”
To be modern means exposure of the breast, the arms, the legs — frontwards and backwards. To be desirable and lusted after, to drive others to lust and even rape, yet not to be raped. That’s the crudeness of our make-up world, sold to and bought by our modern generation, young and old.
Why can’t we desire to be like Christ? We are called to be a Christian nation and to bring about a Christian world. Nothing can bring about greater happiness, truth and beauty. As 1 John 2:14-16 tells us, “You are strong and the word of God, remains in you…If anyone who loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, sensual lust, enticement in the eyes, and a pretentious is not from the Father but is from the world.” We are warned that the world and its enticement are passing away, but whoever does the will of God remains forever.
Who are we? What do we want to be? Happiness is being Christ. Riches, physical beauty, and the best of education cannot bring us fulfilment in this life or the next. When we love God the Father, the son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit, and when we love and serve our poorest of our neighbours we are happy. The word beatitudes means happiness. We will be happy in this world and in the next forever. And, you will bring happiness to yourself and others. Please read Saint Matthew 5: 1-12 again.
