High interest ahead of 62nd Port Antonio International Marlin Tournament

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Excitement is building for one of the Caribbean’s longest-running sportfishing events as the Sir Henry Morgan Anglers Association officially launched the 62nd Annual Port Antonio International Marlin Tournament on Thursday, October 9, at 100 Hope Road in Kingston.

The tournament, which runs from October 22 to 25, 2025, will take place at the Ole’ Marina in Port Antonio, Portland, and promises four days of world-class sport fishing, camaraderie, and community engagement.

During the launch event, chairman Maxim Rochester reflected on the success of last year’s tournament, which recorded an impressive 26 marlin caught and released, averaging nearly two per participating boat.

“This year’s tournament date was carefully selected based on the moon phase, which should allow for an even higher yield for our anglers,” said Rochester, looking ahead to another record-setting event.

Title sponsor Sterling Asset Management Ltd once again signaled its commitment to the tournament and the values it embodies.

“This tournament holds a very special place in our hearts. We are incredibly proud to have been serving as a sponsor for over a decade,” said Marian Ross-Ammar, vice-president, trading and investment at Sterling Asset Management. “It’s now part of our company’s tradition and it’s a way to show not only our love for sport but also our commitment to community and continuity. Over the years, the Sir Henry Morgan Anglers Association has built something remarkable, a tournament that brings together sportsmanship, teamwork, and environmental respect in equal measure.”

A distinctive feature of the event is the Canoe Tournament, which runs alongside the main Marlin Tournament and provides a platform for traditional canoe fishermen to showcase their skills. Using hand-held lines and their own vessels, local anglers from Portland and surrounding parishes compete in a spirited, community-driven event.

“This tournament is unique in that it allows local fisherfolk from Portland and surrounding parishes to actively participate, bringing the community into the heart of the sport,” said Rochester. “It has become so popular that we’ve had to limit entries to 60 canoes, with a maximum of three fisherfolk per boat. And yes, I say fisherfolk because women have become an integral part of the tournament.”

Rochester also highlighted the importance of generational transition within the Anglers Association, noting the club’s commitment to attracting younger members and more women to leadership roles.

“It’s a natural passing of the torch from those of us who have been steering this ship for some time to those who will take it into the next era,” he said. “We’re committed to attracting young, energetic talent, including more women, to ensure that this tournament continues to evolve and grow for decades to come

The success of this tournament is built on relationships with our sponsors, our anglers, and the communities that host us. Sterling Asset Management’s support over the years has been instrumental in keeping the spirit of this event alive.”

The 62nd Annual Port Antonio International Marlin Tournament promises to deliver thrilling competition, teamwork, and world-class sportfishing in one of the region’s most scenic fishing destinations.

“As we prepare for this year’s tournament, we do so with great optimism,” Rochester added. “The weather forecast looks promising, the excitement is building, and the camaraderie remains as strong as ever. The professional anglers, the local canoe fishers, the sponsors, and the community,  that’s what makes this tournament truly special, and it’s why we’re so proud to call it our own.”

Marian Ross-Ammar, Vice-President of Trading and Investment at Sterling Asset Management Ltd., highlighted the company’s longstanding commitment to the event, noting that as title sponsors, Sterling takes great pride in supporting a tournament that has held a special place in its history for over a decade.
