2025/26 NFL season: Week 6 was a head-scratcher; Week 7 promises more of the same

2025/26 NFL season: Week 6 was a head-scratcher; Week 7 promises more of the same

Week 6 of the 2025/26 National Football League (NFL) regular season was a bonafide headscratcher, leaving most fans trying to determine which teams are truly good and which are really bad. Even the Buffalo Bills, who were the last team to register a loss in the league this season, looked ordinary in a 14-24 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Monday night. However, in retrospect, their four wins in their first four games of the season were against teams with the worst records in the NFL so far this year, the Baltimore Ravens (1-5), New York Jets (0-6), Miami Dolphins (1-5), and New Orleans Saints (1-5).

That said, the roller-coaster ride that took place in Week 6 only added to the escalating excitement on the gridiron, showcasing both thrilling match-ups and standout performances. Unfortunately, one of the major highlights surfacing from the action has nothing to do with gameplay, as the Kansas City Chiefs have been thrown under the proverbial spotlight, not due to Taylor Swift, but for the fact that no penalties were accepted against them during their 30-17 victory over the Detroit Lions last Sunday night, despite a few conspicuous incidents, leaving the Detroit-faithful and neutral onlookers calling foul.

Since 2019, with nearly 1,700 games played, only 12 times has a team played a penalty-free game in the NFL, but the Chiefs account for a quarter of those game, and they are 3-0 in those contests, leaving many outside of Arrowhead Stadium to ponder the possibility of an agenda that favours Kansas City. Conversely, the Chiefs were called for 13 penalties in a 28-31 loss the previous week to the Jacksonville Jaguars, their most penalties in seven years.

Kansas City’s zero-accepted-penalty game is the first of its kind across the NFL since the final week of the 2023/24 regular season. On January 17, 2024, the Seattle Seahawks and the Las Vegas Raiders each had zero accepted penalties in their wins over the Arizona Cardinals and the Denver Broncos, respectively. Since 2000, that’s the only day in the NFL that featured multiple teams on the same day having games without an accepted penalty. In Week 16 of the 2011 season the Tennessee Titans and Green Bay Packers also had zero-penalty games, although they came one day apart. However, the Chiefs became the first team since 1972 to have zero accepted penalties, zero turnovers, and no more than one punt in a game.

The Chiefs improved to 3-3 with the victory, while the Lions dropped to 4-2 with the loss and they both have major encounters lined up in Week 7, with Kansas City expected to have the easier of the two clashes. The Chiefs welcome the Las Vegas Raiders (2-4) into Arrowhead early Sunday afternoon and will be the heaviest JustBet NFL-favourite entering the weekend. There is no good reason to bet against the house in that match-up, but the Lions invite one of the two five-win teams, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (5-1), onto Ford Field on Sunday evening for what is expected to be a heavyweight National Football Conference (NFC) match-up.

The Lions vs Buccaneers rivalry has been played 63 times (including 2 postseason games), with Detroit winning 33 games and Tampa Bay winning 30, and the Lions holding a 6-4 edge over the last 10 games. The Buccaneers improved to an NFC-best record with a 30-19 win over the San Francisco 49ers, another top NFC contender, last weekend, with quarterback (QB) Baker Mayfield having another strong performance (17-of-23 passes for 256 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions). He achieved that without his tried and proven targets (Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and Jalen McMillan) and lost standout rookie receiver Emeka Egbuka at half-time.

The Lions, prior to their Week 6 loss to the Chiefs, had the league’s highest-scoring offence (they are now second behind the 5-1 Indianapolis Colts), averaging 34.8 points per game during their 4-1 start, and QB Jared Goff had completed over 75 per cent of his passes for 12 touchdowns against two interceptions. They are back on home soil following two weeks on the road and will certainly be hunting for a win before heading into their bye next week. The Lions have won each of their last nine home games following a loss, and with so many weapons missing for the Buccaneers that trend should continue this week, but the visitors will make this contest very interesting.

There is another matchup, pitting two 4-2 teams, that deserve special mention. The Jacksonville Jaguars invite the Los Angeles Rams into their ‘second home’, Wembley Stadium, on Sunday morning for a highly anticipated encounter. Jacksonville leads the league in London appearances, 11 games, and will add another this weekend, but the Rams enter the contest as slight JustBet favourites. The Jaguars are 6-5 in London games, while the Rams are 2-2 (one loss was when the franchise was in St Louis) in that venue, but head-to-head, the Rams hold a 5-1 advantage.

The Jaguars are coming off a 12-20 loss to the Seattle Seahawks last week, but have looked fairly convincing in their four wins, while the Rams are coming off a 17-3 win over a depleted Baltimore Ravens team and is the only team that can boast a victory over the Colts entering this weekend. The game promises to be entertaining, and it’s hard to tell if jet lag will be a factor, but the logical pick would be the Rams, despite Jacksonville leading the NFL with 14 takeaways. This will be played early on Sunday morning, but it’s a suggested watch and should be well worth the effort.

With play-off implications becoming increasingly significant each week, teams are vying for crucial victories to solidify their standings. After last week’s dizzying display, this week promises to deliver a mix of unexpected outcomes and tactical battles that will shape the remainder of the season. Are you ready for some football?
