2025/26 NFL season: A ‘Mile High Moment’ in week seven; week eight promises high-flying action

2025/26 NFL season: A ‘Mile High Moment’ in week seven; week eight promises high-flying action

EUROPEAN football is in its full, soaring flight; the exhilarating 2025/26 National Football League (NFL) regular season is almost halfway through; the Toronto Blue Jays are in Major League Baseball’s (MLB) World Series — starting tonight — for the first time since 1993, and the National Basketball Association (NBA) 2025/26 regular season tipped off on Tuesday night. All this makes for a cornucopia of sports, with something on tap for almost every fan.

Specifically, week seven in the NFL provided some mouth-watering action, highlighted by the Dallas Cowboys doing a number on the Washington Commanders in a 44-22 win, the Kansas City Chiefs shutting out the Las Vegas Raiders, 31-0; the New York Giants experiencing a massive collapse against the Denver Broncos, losing 32-33; the Detroit Lions stoutly defending their den against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, winning 24-9; and it appears that everybody’s going to beat the New York Jets this season, following their 6-13 loss to the Carolina Panthers.

That said, the events in Denver last Sunday must receive special mention because of the magnitude of the moment. Depending on perspective, it can be seen as a ‘mile-high miracle’ or a ‘mile high meltdown’. But regardless of how it is viewed, the historic significance is undeniable. The Giants shut out the Broncos, in front of their home crowd, for three quarters, leading 19-0 and appeared to be in total control heading into the final stanza. But the final score proved otherwise.

Already this season, 30 games have been decided by winning scores in the final two minutes of regulation or in overtime — the most ever through the first seven weeks of a season — but this one was different. The visitors still led 26-8 with six minutes left to play but that lead inexplicably evaporated, with the Broncos finishing off the miracle comeback with a field goal, as time expired, for the win. Additionally, Denver’s quarterback (QB) Bo Nix became the first player in NFL history with two touchdown passes and two rushing touchdowns in a fourth quarter.

The game was the first time since 1970 that a team leading by 18 plus points, with six minutes remaining, lost in regulation. Furthermore, NFL teams had won 1,686 consecutive games when leading by 18 plus points, with six minutes or less to play in the fourth quarter, prior to last Sunday. And Denver’s 33 fourth-quarter points are tied with Dallas on December 4, 2022 for the second-most points scored by one team in a fourth quarter in NFL history, trailing only Detroit on September 30, 2007 (34).

Looking ahead to this weekend, week eight has only two matchups with both teams having winning records, including QB Aaron Rodgers facing his former team on Sunday night in prime time. JustBet has the visitors favoured in both high-flying encounters. However prior to that, earlier on the same day, the Buffalo Bills (4-2) will visit Bank of America Stadium to tackle the Carolina Panthers (4-3) in the first of the two encounters. The Bills started the season 4-0, then went on a two-game skid before their bye in week seven, while the Panthers started a lot slower but have won three straight entering Week 8.

That said, the Panthers are 2-6 all-time against the Bills but are 1-2 at home in those contests. However, these two teams have not played each other since December 19, 2021 when the Bills prevailed 31-14 in Buffalo, so there is not much recent history between them to go by. Still, there are a number of factors to consider, which justify why JustBet has the visitors favoured by a touchdown entering the weekend. Carolina’s QB Bryce Young suffered a high ankle sprain near the end of the third quarter last Sunday, during their victory over the Jets, and is expected to be out for week eight, which would activate Andy Dalton in the starting role. Dalton has played in 12 games for Carolina and started in six over his three seasons with the team, for an unimpressive 1-5 record.

Also weighing heavily in Buffalo’s favour is the fact that during Head Coach Sean McDermott’s tenure the Bills have had a perfect win streak after bye weeks since 2017, an 8-0 record. In those games the Bills have averaged 27.5 points per game and 352.1 total offensive yards. Defensively, they’ve allowed 17.6 points per game and forced 16 takeaways. Additionally, since his rookie season (2018) QB Josh Allen is 7-0 after a bye week and has a total of 16 touchdowns in those games. Despite the fact that their wins this season came against teams with very poor records, anticipate the Bills shrugging off the memory of those two losses and getting back to winning ways on Sunday.

The Pittsburgh Steelers (4-2) and the Green Bay Packers (4-1-1) lock horns in Acrisure Stadium on Sunday night for a prime time battle, with the visitors entering as JustBet three-point favorites. These teams have met 37 times (including once in the postseason), with Green Bay winning 20 games and Pittsburgh winning 17, but the last meeting was in December 2023 and the landscapes for both teams have changed significantly since then. The Steelers are coming off a thrilling 31-33 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals last week Thursday, while the Panthers are coming off a hard-fought 13-6 victory over the winless Jets — but the biggest storyline is Pittsburgh’s QB and his history with Green Bay.

The Steelers are already 1-0 in “Rodgers Bowl” this season — having beaten the Jets 34-32 in week one — where the 41-year-old Rodgers spent two years, up to last season. In this week’s encounter he will face his more notable former team where he spent 18 years, winning Super Bowl XLV in 2011 and being named the game’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) while also being named league MVP in four of the seasons in Green Bay: 2011, 2014, 2020, and 2021. But while Rodgers might feel the need to prove a point, entering the weekend tied for fourth in the league in passing touchdowns (14), his best years are behind him and his offensive line will have to deal with the best pass rusher in the NFL in the last five years, Micah Parsons. The matchup may look attractive on paper but if the Pittsburgh defence can’t hold strain this game may be over in a hurry. Are you ready for some football?
