Two communities remain marooned after Melissa — ODPEM
Rain could affect relief efforts this week
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Director General of the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) Commander Alvin Gayle says two communities in western Jamaica are still marooned.
The communities, Petersville, Westmoreland and Ducketts, St James, are classified as marooned because they are “completely cut off and solely accessible by air, where no road, be it double or single access, is available.”
Gayle confirmed that both areas have received air drops of supplies.
Aside from the marooned communities, around 34 roadways remain completely blocked.
Additionally, Gayle said rising groundwater continues to affect Content, Manchester and Brighton, St Elizabeth.
The current weather forecast is predicting showers and gusty winds for Northern parishes into Thursday.
Gayle said while significant showers are not expected, the weather could hamper relief efforts in the affected areas.
