The Skin Lab redefines skincare through science

In an era when beauty trends often overshadow medical science, The Skin Lab Jamaica, guided by the vision and expertise of its founder, Dr Keren-Marie St Clair, has been steadily carving out a new, science-driven standard for skin health across the Caribbean.

Founded in 2019, the medical aesthetics and dermatology company was built on a simple yet powerful philosophy: skincare should be evidence-based, personalised, and rooted in long-term health care practices rather than quick cosmetic fixes.

“The business was started to address a critical gap in the Caribbean market for science-driven skin health solutions that go beyond cosmetic beauty. There was a clear need for a practice that prioritised education, accurate diagnosis, and treatment planning tailored to Caribbean skin types, climate, and lifestyle, while maintaining international medical standards,” St Clair recently told the
Jamaica Observer as she outlined reasons for starting the company.

As a Trinidadian practising in Jamaica, St Clair, also recognising the need to establish a Caribbean-based practice grounded in education, science, and proper clinical care, said these principles became the foundation of her company, which seeks to integrate medical dermatology, advanced aesthetic treatments, and a clinically formulated skincare product line designed specifically for people of the Caribbean.

Unlike trend-driven approaches and aesthetic shortcuts, the budding entrepreneur also believes her treatment protocols are designed to deliver meaningful, long-term results for patients across the region.

Operating primarily out of Jamaica, The Skin Lab serves both local and regional clients, while also attracting growing international interest in its products and evidence-based philosophy.

“Our clients include women and men seeking professional skin health care, patients with chronic or complex skin concerns and individuals interested in preventive and restorative aesthetic treatments. We also serve customers who purchase our skincare products for home use, including those who may not require in-clinic treatments but value medically formulated skincare,” St Clair further said to Sunday Finance.

Among the company’s comprehensive range of services are medical dermatology consultations, micro-needling, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, polydioxanone (PDO) thread lifts, botox and dermal fillers, as well as non-surgical liquid Brazilian butt lift (BBL) treatments.

In addition to the in-clinic services, the company has also developed a carefully curated skincare line formulated by Dr St Clair to address some of the most common skin concerns affecting Caribbean clients, including hyperpigmentation, acne management, and skin barrier repair. These products are specifically designed to perform effectively in the region’s heat, humidity, and environmental stressors.

Through the products and services offered, the company distinguishes itself with the quality of the patient’s experience — wherein extended consultation times, in-depth skin analysis, and a strong emphasis on education are central to every visit.

“At The Skin Lab Jamaica clients are treated as active partners in their skin health journey and are also empowered with the requisite knowledge and realistic expectations,” St Clair stated.

“Our greatest achievements include building a trusted medical brand, developing a locally formulated skincare line approved for use and cultivating strong patient loyalty. We are particularly proud of the trust our clients place in us and the consistent outcomes achieved through education-led, results-driven care,” she further noted.

Like many start-ups, the facility having navigated a wide range of challenges, including staff shortages and managing rising operational costs, has despite these hurdles, continued to demonstrate steady and healthy growth. The business is privately funded through owner investment and reinvestment of operating revenues.

Despite ongoing challenges, operations are supported by a multidisciplinary team of medical professionals, clinical support staff, administrative personnel, and consultants, allowing the business to retain the independence needed to focus on quality-driven solutions rather than short-term gains.

“Our focus remains on sustainable growth, operational stability, and reinvestment into service quality, staff development, and product innovation,” St Clair said as she noted some ambitious but measured plans for the future.

“Over the next 3-5 years, we plan to expand our product line, increase regional distribution while continuing to refine our clinical offerings. We also aim to explore additional service capabilities and potential new locations, while positioning The Skin Lab Jamaica as a leading Caribbean authority in skin health and medical aesthetics,” she added.

Products developed by The Skin Lab are specifically designed to perform effectively in the region’s heat, humidity and environmental stressors.
