Injuries force changes to Jamaica’s Carifta Games team

Four athletes, including Excelsior High’s Riquelme Reid, have been replaced in the Jamaica team for Saturday’s start of the Carifta Games in Grenada.

Reid was the Class 1 Boys’ 100m champion during the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships last week. He pulled up in the first round of the 200m of the Boys’ Championships, a day after he won the 100m in 10.12 seconds. He took no further part in the event.

He is replaced by Calabar High’s Khamani Gordon, who was fourth in the Boys’ Under-20 100m final during the Carifta Trial at the National Stadium from March 6-8.

Camperdown High’s Daequan Maragh, who was second in the Boys’ Under-20 200m at the trial, is replaced by Jamaica College’s Elijah Smiekle, who had finished third.

Hydel High’s Junior Gallimore, who was second both in the Boys’ Under-20 400m at the trial and in the Class 1 Boys’ 400m at the ISSA Championships, is replaced by Kingston College’s Jabulani McLeod.

Holmwood Technical’s Annastacia Hall, who was second in the Girls’ Under-20 400m at the Carifta Trial, is replaced by Alphansus Davis High’s Shanika Lindsay.

Happy Grove High’s Jaquan Souden, who was second in the Decathlon during the ISSA Championships, and Edwin Allen High’s Britani Barron, who won the Heptathlon, are also to be added to the team. The Jamaicans are seeking the country’s 39th-straight Carifta Games title.
